Purpose

To provide a highly specialized health care services, a platform for the training of health workers, a place of research, and to serve as specialist referral centres for regional hospitals and neighbouring provinces.

There are four central (tertiary) hospitals in Gauteng:

• Dr George Mukhari Hospital
• Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital
• Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital
