HCT Campaign

1. INTRODUCTION

Last year on World AIDS Day, President Zuma announced a mass HIV testing campaign for 2010 on World AIDS Day 2009.  Over 25% of adults in Gauteng have tested recently for HIV and over 800,000 people testing in Gauteng province in 2009 alone. We aim to test 5 million people in Gauteng for HIV between April 2010 and June 2011.  This guideline aim to show the people working on the campaign how HIV counselling and testing (HCT) will be done.

Objectives of the campaign:

  1. Increased safe sex behaviours to reduce new HIV infections: through education and HIV testing.
  2. Reduced illness and deaths from TB and AIDS: through timeous diagnosis and treatment of HIV, TB and AIDS.
  3. Increased capacity of health services to address AIDS: through “mainstreaming” AIDS care into all health services.

Strategies for increased HIV testing:

  1. All clinics and hospitals provide HIV counselling and testing (HCT).
  2. A mass HCT campaign in April 2010 followed by sub-campaigns.
  3. Health services promote HIV testing for all patients (Provider initiated Campaign and Testing).
  4. HCT services in communities including hostels, malls and informal settlements.
  5. Mass media and community mobilisation.
